Herbert was surprised to learn true date when he obtained a Birth Certificate, when over 60. - CC]; educated Winchester, Balliol, Inner Temple; barrister; Bursar and Steward of College Manors, Winchester College; F.S.A.; antiquary and genealogist. At Oxford (1882-6), 1st Cl. Mods and 3rd Cl. Lit.Hum., M.A. 1889; in University Association Football XI 1885-6 and won Fives and Lawn Tennis Doubles; also in College Football and Cricket XI's. Barrister, Inner Temple, 1889, secretary 1903. He married 1890 Aug 9 Mabel Agatha BRADBY, born 1865 May 2, died 1944 Jul 10, daughter of the Rev Edward Henry BRADBY, D.D., Headmaster of Haileybury, and had issue:
i. Christopher, b.1893 Jun 18, d.1953; educated Westminster and Balliol, B.A. 1919, M.A. 1922; ordained; Rector of Scunthorpe and Kessingland, Norfolk; retired 1952 on medical grounds and subsequently lived mainly at the West Park Hotel, St Andrews, Fife; was a member of the Society of Genealogists. Married and had issue a daughter who was brought up by her maternal grandparents at Dundee (CC's letter of 1952 Sep 4).
ii. Letitia, b.1897 Jul 15; educated privately and at Newnham; maths Pt I Cl.II 1917, Med.Sci. Cl.I 1921, M.A.; govt. research, engineering maths, Cambridge, 1926-34; research assistant City and Guilds (Engin.), Imperial College, London, 1934: FRAeS; AMICE 1917; first woman member, tech. committee, and member research committee, to review designs, Arch. dams, 1958. iii. Patience Penelope, b.1904 Apr 1; married 1924 Sep 13 Ronald Sutherland Brook SINCLAIR, who died 1953, Vicar of Ashford, Kent, Rector of Buckland, Dover. They had issue.
