However, our case would be that men from Chiltley were called CHITTY or CHETEYE as early as 1371, and, pending the wholesale research suggested by Sir Anthony Wagner (as mentioned earlier) or specific investigation as outlined by Professor Smith, a number of points may be made.
Surrey Archdeaconry archives show the name CHYDLEY in 1571, and CHIDLEY appears in Middlesex Archdeaconry in 1672-83. The Parish Register of Petersfield, Hants., shows CHITLEY in 1579 (CHELLY and CHILLEY are found at Sevenoaks, Kent, from 1589). The Bramshott Parish Register itself (beginning in 1560) shows CHITTY, CHETY, etc., from 1570, and one example of CHILTLY in 1575. Unfortunately it is not possible to show that Elizabeth CHILTLY was of the same family as the CHITTYs in this perish.
What is certain is that John CHYTTIE the elder whose will was proved in 1549 lived at Bohunt, about one mile from Chiltley in Bramshott parish; and that Thomas CHETEYE acquired a piece of land at Eashing, Godalming, within 10 miles of Chiltley, in 1371.
Forms of the name found at Godalming after CHETEYE 1371 are CHYTTEY 1427, CHITEY 1441 and finally CHITTY 1483, though variants of course continue to be used later.
It seems likely that most of the CHITTYs of later generations derive from Godalming ancestors; but the longest reasonably well proved pedigree starts at Bohunt.
