Matthew Chitty
(d.1610/11) of Godalming and North Warnborough

Matthew CHITTY himself served as a juror at the Godalming Hundred Court in 1583, defaulted from service there in 1587, and was on the High Tything in 1589 and 1590. In the latter year, Sep 24, he alienated his tenement and garden to one Richard HAMMOND, yeoman, whose Will (1600/1) refers to his house in Godalming town, with orchards, barns etc, bought of Matthew.

Matthew appears to have settled at North Warnborough, between Greywell and Odiham in Hampshire. His Will, dated 1610 Oct 4,was not proved until 1614 Jul 1, perhaps because his son and executor Abraham was so involved in the Chancery suit on his uncle Robert's intestacy. Matthew was probably buried at Odiham, 1610 Oct 23, and was certainly dead by 1611 Oct 15, but the burial might be that of his son. (A note below examines this problem for genealogists and lawyers rather than for general readers of this account).

Matthew and Elizabeth certainly had at least five children:

Dorothy was buried at Odiham 1610 Nov 9, the day before her mother; some epidemic was probably rife. She had been named in her father's Will, made the previous month.

Matthew, also named in his father's Will and in the intestacy suit in 1613; of him, nothing more is known.

Abraham
, baptised at Godalming 1582 Sep 2; it is with him and his issue that the rest of this account is concerned.

Debora, baptised at Godalming 1583 Jan 12 and named 1610.

William, baptised there 1585 Feb 27 but not named in his father's will in 1610, though no burial record has been found.

[Was the 1610 burial that of Matthew or of his grandson?
1609 Apr 17 Matthew son of Abraham baptised at Odiham.
1610 Oct 4 Matthew, clothier, makes will naming wife and children Abraham, Matthew, Dorothy, Debora. A 'death-bed Will'?

1610 Nov 9 Dorothy daughter of Matthew buried, Odiham. No mention of father being deceased.
1610 Nov 10 Elizabeth, wife (not called widow) of Matt. bd. Odiham.
1611 Oct 15 Inventory of Matthew's goods taken for Probate.
1612 Oct 6 Robert buried, Odiham.
1612 Dec 11 Nicholas's Will names brother John and sons of brothers Matthew and Robert.
1613 Robert's Intestacy case involves Matthew's sons.
1614 Jul 1 Matthew's Will proved, Winchester, by son Abraham, relict Elizabeth having died.
1615 Jun 11 Matthew, son of Abraham, baptised, Odiham. Should this be burial, or was it another Matthew, the one baptised 1609 having died?]
